Student tests positive for COVID-19 at Riverside Public School

By James Sebastian-Scott

Waterloo Region District School Board and Region of Waterloo Public Health have confirmed a student at Riverside Public School in Elmira has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a release, the school board said the student was last in the school Friday. The identity of the student is protected by privacy legislation and will not be released.

Public Health said it is in the process of contacting all high-risk contacts of the positive case and will provide individual guidance to them.

High-risk contacts in the identified cohort will be directed to self-isolate until at least Oct. 2 or longer if symptomatic.

The school board goes on to say appropriate cleaning measures have been undertaken at the school and it is hopeful to resume access on Sept. 21.

This is the third confirmed case in a school setting in the region.

A teacher tested positive at Edna Staebler Public School in Waterloo Sept. 6., and a student at St. Anne Catholic Elementary School in Cambridge tested positive Sept. 16.
