GoFundMe page set up for Waterloo man after presumed Lake Erie drowning

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

A GoFundMe page has been set up for a Waterloo man who presumably drowned in Lake Erie.

Douglas Gomez Jr. went missing in Port Colborne Thursday after he and another man were attempting to save four children at Sherkston Beach, when the water became rough.

According to Niagara Regional police, lifeguards lost sight of Gomez after a rescue attempt and the Marine Unit was called in to help search for him.

Police say they believe the 33-year-old man to have drowned.

Gomez's sister, Cassandra Gomez, created the donation page to help cover funeral costs. The family is hoping to raise $25,000.

On the page, his sister wrote, 'On August 27th my brother was a hero and went into the water to save two children from strong waves. The children got saved, but he went under and got lost.'

Since being published almost 24 hours ago, a total of $14,761 has been raised.
