GRH issues statement about former neurologist charged in sexual assault investigation

Grand River Hospital's president and CEO has issued a statement in regards to a sexual assault investigation surrounding a former neurologist, who ran his practice out of the hospital.

Waterloo Regional Police allege from January 2010 to February 2017, a physician sexually assaulted patients who were under his care.

Jeffrey Sloka, 50, of Waterloo, was arrested by police on Tuesday morning.

He's facing 34 sexual assault charges.

Police also allege there were 34 different victims.

“We were deeply saddened to learn about the allegations against Dr. Sloka and express our sincere apologies and sympathies to those patients who have been affected by this experience.” GRH President and CEO, Ron Gagnon said in a statement, released Wednesday.

Gagnon said Sloka has not practiced at the hospital since April of this year.

“Grand River Hospital takes the safety and quality of care for our patients very seriously and the alleged actions of Dr. Sloka do not reflect the values, standards, beliefs or behaviour of our staff and physicians.” added Gagnon. “The hospital has worked in cooperation with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and will continue to work cooperatively with the authorities involved.”

Police said on Tuesday the investigation is ongoing, adding they believe there may be more victims.

In April, Sloka's licence was revoked by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario over allegations of sexual misconduct and assault, involving three women.
