Rabies vaccine bait drops to begin next week

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The province has announced it will start its annual aerial rabies vaccine bait drop on Monday, August 19.

The baits will be distributed by aircraft and by hand in areas including, Waterloo Region, Oxford as well as Wellington County.

It's expected all the baits will have been dropped in this part of the province by September 6, but is all dependant on the weather.

Since the start of the rabies outbreak four years ago, the province says it has distributed over four million vaccine baits from air and the ground – which in turn immunizes
most raccoons, skunks and foxes that eat them.

The khaki-green coloured bait has a label with a toll-free telephone number (1-888-574-6656) and “Do not eat” on it.

If you find one, you are asked not to touch and leave it for the wildlife to eat.
