UN diplomats: New talks on Western Sahara expected in March

U.N. diplomats say a second round of U.N.-brokered talks on the conflict over Western Sahara is expected between Morocco and the Polisario Front in March, a hopeful sign following the Security Council’s call almost a year ago to speed up a solution to the 43-year dispute.
Former German President Horst Koehler is the U.N.’s Western Sahara envoy, and diplomats say he told the council Tuesday that he is planning to hold separate talks with all parties in February before meeting with them together in March.
German Ambassador Christoph Heusgen told reporters after the meeting that “I do see hope.” He said this is “a conflict we can resolve.”
South African Ambassador Jerry Matjila said that “it’s very positive that the parties are talking.”
