Former Kitchener MP to run for federal leader of Green Party

Former Kitchener Centre Member of Parliament Mike Morrice has announced his intentions to run for the top job in the Green Party of Canada.
An official announcement for his leadership bid is planned at THEMUSEUM in downtown Kitchener at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Elizabeth May, the longtime leader of the Green Party of Canada, announced her intention to step down last year, with hopes of rejuvenating the party.
Morrice was elected MP in Kitchener Centre in 2021, becoming just the second Green MP elected to the House of Commons and the second Green MP elected outside of B.C.
He lost his seat in the next election to Conservative Kelly DeRidder in 2025.
At the time of his loss, Morrice told CityNews Kitchener he would be reflecting on what comes next in his political future.
“It is the privilege of a lifetime to have had the opportunity to serve our community as our MP. To be the person responsible for bringing voices from our community to Ottawa and for getting results for our community.”
In November 2025, he was named as the Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Canada and also served as the party’s critic for Housing and Disability Inclusion on Shadow Cabinet.
The new leader of the Green Party will be announced on November 15.
Morrice has only one other competitor for the job. The Green Party announced Ottawa high school teacher Nira Dookeran would also be running for the role.
