A business that has been operating in Listowel for over 30 years has been destroyed after a fire on Sunday night.

Crews were called to fully engulfed fire at Keeso Sawmill on Highway 23 between Listowel and Gowanstown around 10:30 p.m.

Assistant Fire Chief Jason Benn with North Perth Fire says they had to call in additional units and use over a million litres of water to break down the blaze.

“We were supplying water for two aerial trucks and four other water stations for hand-lines. 1.3 million litres of water was used to combat it.”

Additional units from Huron East, Perth East, Minto, and Mapleton were all called in to help battle the blaze

Benn says the family is devastated as the sawmill has been completely destroyed.

Early damage estimates for the fire is over $4 million.

Benn says there is no indication at this time that the fire is suspicious and the investigation has now been turned over to the insurance company. However, crews were still on scene Wednesday morning putting out hot spots.

The Keeso Sawmill has been in operation in Listowel since 1984.
