Fire at Safety-Kleen in Breslau

A few contractors suffered minor injuries after a fire at the Safety-Kleen in Breslau.

Woolwich Township District Chief Kevin Carley says the fire started when hot oil was released from a piping system and ignited.

“There’s an oil distillation unit in behind this that was shut down for maintenance,” he said, “Something went wrong, either they were taking pipes apart but there was hot oil that was able to release from the pipe system.”

Flames could be seen as high as 30 feet in the air.

The building—already closed for the day because of the maintenance work—was evacuated.

Carley says even with all that help, they got some extra assistance from inside.

“(Safety-Kleen has) a pretty elaborate suppression system throughout the plant, and that worked and was able to control the fire until we arrived,” he said.

An eye-witness phoned in to 570NEWS, saying multiple emergency crews and numerous volunteer firefighters arrived at the scene.

They add the fire also released a “very strong, acrid” smell in the neighbourhood.

No word on damage costs, but Carley called it a “very minor fire.”
