“Had they fallen, it would have been fatal.” That’s the message from Huron County OPP after three men climbed a nearly 200 foot water tower in Hensall.
They say it all happened on Canada Day at a water tower on Richmond Street North. Witnesses reported that ‘youths’ had climbed up the tower, and were seen setting off fireworks.
Officers arrived and found that three men in their 20s entered a fenced area at the base of the tower, and proceeded to climb up towards the observation deck.
The men were allegedly drinking alcohol, letting off fireworks, and were trying to catch a glimpse of the big fireworks show in Grand Bend.
A fire rescue team was called in and they safely lowered one of the men, but the other two climbed down on their own — against the directions of officers.
Huron OPP Constable Ed Barty condemns the incident, saying “this was an incredibly dangerous stunt, had they fallen it would have been certainly fatal.”
Two men from Huron County and one man from Perth County have been charged with trespassing. They’ll appear in Goderich court in September.
