Harmony Lunch: Last burgers go on the grill Saturday

The place for pork patties and fried onions has finally found a buyer. Harmony Lunch confirms that this Saturday will be its last day in business after 86 years of serving Waterloo Region.
Owner Bruce Marks tells 570 News that he had members of a private development company come in on Monday to measure the dimensions of the 1930’s restaurant.
The property was bought for $1.4 million, but the Marks family doesn’t know what developers plan to do at 90 King Street North.
Needless to say, the region will miss the food but more importantly the service Harmony and Bruce have provided.
Marks says regular patrons who’ve been coming to eat diner style meals for years is what has kept the iconic spot open for longer than expected. “I’m going to miss the people and coming to work every morning and seeing their faces, these people are what has kept me going for all these years.”
On his retirement plans, Bruce laughed about how he’ll spend his days. “I’ve got a cottage up on Wasaga Beach that I’ll be using more often. I’ll also be sleeping in and spending time with my family.”
The region can agree that after 65 years at a grill, Bruce deserves the time off. After all, he mixes 300 pounds of beef and cuts 250 pounds of onions every day. It’s also his favourite meal to cook. “It’s definitely the hamburgers and fried onions for sure. I mean we have all kinds of meals on the menu but since my father Harry served 10 cent patties from a pick up window, that’s the staple of our restaurant and I enjoyed cooking them.”
Harry Marks started Harmony Lunch in 1930 and asked Bruce when he was 12 to help him. For 65 years, Bruce has worn the apron and flipped the burgers.
Harmony Lunch has reworked their hours these last couple of days over fears of not being able to serve the lines of people wanting to sit down for one last special meal.
Saturday will be the final time Harmony Lunch opens their doors to Waterloo Region.
