Franklin shuts down from Clyde to Savage for roundabout work

Expect another closure through Cambridge as road work on the roundabouts on Franklin Boulevard wraps up this weekend.
Frank Kosa with the Region of Waterloo says the closure gets underway Saturday morning at 6 a.m.
“Franklin will be closed from just north of Clyde Road to just south of Savage Drive. Clyde will be closed on either side of Franklin, and Savage will be closed just east of Franklin. There will be no direct access to side streets off of Franklin in those closure limits.”
Kosa says the roundabouts and continuous centre medians are being implemented to help address collision and congestion issues.
“A lot of the more serious collisions on Franklin in the past have been related to drivers making left turns at intersections or side streets along the corridor, drivers stopping to make those turns have also been hit in that area, so these roundabouts will eliminate these more dangerous types of collisions and will also help to improve the traffic flow.”
Kosa says the continuous centre medians will also change the way drivers reach driveways and local side-streets on the opposite side of the road.
“Rather than taking a left turn, they’ll need to proceed to the next roundabout and turn around to head back and make a right turn. This may seem like an inconvenience but the time that it takes to drive that extra little bit of distance may actually be less than the time previously spent waiting to make that left turn. It should also put drivers at less risk of being in a serious collision.”
