The Guelph Professional Firefighters Association held their annual “Fill the Boot” drive outside of Stone Road Mall this weekend to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
Firefighters, volunteers from Scotiabank and members of Conestoga College’s pre service firefighters program came out to hold firefighter boots on the medians at all of the entrances to the mall.
Firefighters have partnered with Muscular Dystrophy for close to 60 years, and have been holding this fundraiser for many years as well.
Guelph firefighter Matt Gervais says that they are proud to still be raising money for this cause.
“There are so many worthy causes out there but this one is near and dear to our hearts,” says Gervais. “We get to see and meet the families that we’re effecting and a lot of them are kids.”
He adds that they were able to raise $16,000 last year, and he hopes to break that record this year, and they have a good shot at it, having totalled their Saturday earnings at $10,000, with Sunday’s earnings still needing to be added up.
The grand total will be released Monday afternoon, with an additional dollar for dollar being donated by Scotiabank for the first $5,000.
Gervais says he’s thankful to everyone involved in the project.
“Just, thank you to everyone who has come out. We really do appreciate it, it makes a huge, huge difference and we are honoured to be able to work in and serve this community.”
