Crashes involving school buses up in Waterloo Region

A disturbing trend is emerging when it comes to school buses in Waterloo Region.
The annual report from Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region shows collisions involving the buses are up more than a third over the previous year.
The figures compared the 2014-15 school year to the same period the year before.
General Manager of the agency, Benoit Bourgault says while the figures are “disappointing” he points to last year’s harsh winter as one reason for the increase.
He tells the Record, “The tougher the weather, the more collisions you have, because people are not driving according to the conditions.”
However, collisions are also up this year, something he says may be due in part to driver turnover, which he says is an issue across the province.
One positive note out of the report is that no students were injured in local school bus collisions last year, whereas in a typical year, three are hurt.
