Roll up the rim to help those in need: WLU staff collecting winning Tim Hortons tabs

Sometimes simple ideas are best.
Just ask Cec Joyal,a development officer at Wilfrid Laurier University,
“I was at a Tim Hortons having a coffee during roll up the rim, and rolled up a winning cup of coffee, and as I was leaving I saw a homeless person and said here, have a free cup of coffee, and then I started thinking, can I do this on a larger scale?”
That was ten years ago, Joyal has been collecting winning roll-up tabs ever since.
Two years ago Joyal and Wilfrid Laurier University collected around 2,500 tabs, and are hoping for more of the same this year.
According to Joyal, its not just about the free food or coffee, it gives these people a a break from being on the streets.
“It gives them a place to go to warm up, even though there are emergency shelters … they still have to leave in the morning and they still have to wander the streets, so it gives them a place go and they aren’t really allowed to stay in a Tim Hortons unless they order something, so it gives them a place to stay there legitimately and enjoy their coffee.”
Anyone wishing to donate a winning tab can do so at a drop box at International News on Laurier’s Waterloo campus or at Joyal’s office in Alumni Hall; tabs can be dropped off in person or sent through interoffice mail.

On the Brantford campus, tabs can be sent to Alumni Relations and Development Officer Penny Friesen in the SC Johnson Building, room 102.
