More CCTV cameras turned on in tri-cities, totalling 15 in region

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras with automated licence plate recognition (ALPR) continue to expand in Waterloo Region.
In it’s latest update, the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) said three additional cameras are now online in Kitchener, Cambridge and Waterloo.
The additional cameras put the total number of CCTV devices up to 15 regionwide.
The new locations include King Street and Ontario Street in Kitchener, Main and Ainslie Street in Cambridge and Bridgeport Road East and King Street North in Waterloo.

In August, police said the CCTV cameras had so far been used in 19 investigations spanning from sexual assault cases, an abduction investigation, and even helped to determine in one case that a serious crime had not happened.
In the update to the Waterloo Regional Police Services Board, police said the cameras were used ten times in Cambridge, eight times in Waterloo, and once in North Dumfries.
The cameras in Kitchener, near Fairview Park Mall, were not installed until August 6, and not included in the numbers.
Woolwich and Wellesley councils have yet to make a final decision on whether or not to allow the cameras on municipal property, while Wilmot Township Council said it would not move forward with the plan.
Police Chief Mark Crowell said there are ongoing conversations with the province about how to use this technology more efficiently, adding it is very much at the forefront in discussions about the future of policing.
