Mumps outbreak at two Guelph highschools

The Guelph Health Unit is pushing vaccination, in light of a local mumps outbreak.

The push, comes despite the fact, that the six students infected right now, were vaccinated.

The Medical Officer of Health for Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph says two doses of the MMR vaccine are needed – that’s the measles, mumps rubella childhood vaccine.

The Guelph Mercury reports six cases of mumps have been confirmed in Guelph.

Three are students at Bishop Macdonell Catholic High School and two at Our Lady of Lourdes High School.

An elementary school student is also infected.

Officials held immunizations clinics at the two high schools this week.

Health officials say symptoms include swollen glands, headache, and fever.

Mumps can be transmitted by sharing things like water bottles.. or musical instruments.
