10:00 – Shooting Vigil, Protest

Friends and family of Beau Baker, as well as many others from the community began paying their final respects to the young man at a candlelight vigil. There were about 200 people in attendance, many in their teens and early twenties, just like Beau Baker himself. Meanwhile, organizers are planning a gathering in downtown Kitchener for what they’re calling an “anti-police brutality” protest this afternoon at Kitchener City Hall at 3 p.m. to call on justice for Beau Baker. Regional Police say if protests occur, they will respect the right of local residents to express themselves, but police will be there to ensure all who attend are safe.
10:30 – Role of SIU
Ian Scott, former Director, Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit
The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is automatically called when police are involved with serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault. Ian Scott is the former director of the SIU from 2008 to 2013, during those five years he reviewed over 1,000 investigations and laid over 50 criminal charges.
