1:00 AM – Kitchener Budget

Kitchener homeowners will pay just over $19 more on this year’s city property tax bill. City council has approved the 2015 budget which checks in with a 1.9% tax increase. But there’s another item that will push up tax bills even higher. There is also the matter of water and sanitary sewer rates – which will climb 9.9-percent. That money is aimed at addressing our aging infrastructure. Those items combined will push the average tax bill up by 96-dollars. Yvonne Fernandes put forward a motion to remove $100K from the storm water storage fund and move it to cover other costs in an effort to lower the rate. The motion was defeated.
11:30 AM – Everest Protest

Students and staff locked out of Kitchener’s Everest College planned what they call a “peaceful rally” in front of the campus earlier this morning. They say the protest is aimed at convincing the province to temporarily lift its suspension of operations at the school, so that students can finish their programs. Demonstrators gathered in front of the Gaukel street Campus at ten this morning, armed with their petition for supporters to sign. Organizer Miriam Gold tells 570 News they’ve already garnered 5-thousand signatures. The protesters say if the province does not reopen the colleges….they want the suspension lifted so that the campuses across Ontario can be purchased and continue to operate under new management.
