Drug alert issued for Waterloo Region after 48 overdoses, 1 death

By Erin Anderson

A drug alert has been issued for Waterloo Region after dozens of overdoses were reported in less than a week.

Region of Waterloo Public Health says there were 48 suspected drug poisonings and one suspected drug-related death from Sept. 14 to Sept. 17.

The Sanguen Health Drug Checking Program continues to see fentanyl mixed with other substances like opioids or tranquilizers, and say yellow powdered drugs have been identified as a concern.

Officials note that the unregulated street supply continues to be highly toxic and drugs may be stronger than expected.

The new Community Drug Alert follows an extended alert in August that involved a total of 62 reported overdoses and four related-deaths.
