12:00 – Maupin Police video

Walk a mile in someone else’s shoes…that’s exactly what Rev. Jarrett Maupin did. The community activist has been highly critical of police conduct and has led protests of the shootings and arrests of black suspects in the Phoenix area. He agreed to take part in a use-of-force training scenario to see how he would react if confronted with uncooperative and aggressive suspects. The training exercise was set up by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and recorded by Fox TV. The first scenario has Maupin question a man he believes is going to break into a vehicle in a parking lot.
In the second scenario, Maupin confronts two men arguing – one who then rushes toward him – before Maupin “shoots” him. The third scenario involves a man carrying a knife in his waistband…who he is able to wrestle to the ground.
Maupin says the experience has changed his attitudes toward police use of force – although critics are quick to say that back-up would be an option, as well as the use of batons, spray and Tasers.
12:30 – Banned tobacco

The spokesperson with the National Coalition Against Contraband Tobacco is in Kitchener today, as part of a tour to highlight Ontario’s illegal cigarette problem. According to the group, about 1 in 3 cigarettes in Ontario are illegal, and a December study by the Ontario Convenience Stores Association identified a contraband incidence of almost 42% outside Forest Heights Collegiate Institute and almost 39% at the Grand River Hospital in Waterloo Region. The RCMP estimate that there are about 175 organized crime groups that use it to fund other illegal activities, including guns, drugs and human smuggling. The coalition is calling on the Ontario government to include real action to address this problem in the next budget. They have a meeting at 1:30 at City Hall with Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic and join us in studio now.
