10:00- Todd Cowan, Mayor of Woolwich Township
Regional Police have been asked to investigate the expense claims of Woolwich Township Mayor Todd Cowan. The request comes from township council after it completed an internal review of his expense claim filings. It says says the review was carried out after township and regional staff were alerted to “certain discrepancies and irregularities” and the review “confirmed that there were a number of likely double reimbursements with respect to conference, mileage and per diem/meal expense claims.” Woolwich CAO David Brenneman says the decision to contact police was made because “neither Council nor staff has the expertise to consider and make decisions with respect to Mayor Cowan’s intent.” Cowan has issued a statement saying after he became aware of the issue, he recognized that indeed he “had made an inadvertent error and immediately raised the issue with my colleagues at Regional Council and Township Council. I promptly reimbursed the Region for the overpayment.” At question: about $2,700. He calls it an innocent mistake.
10:30- Berry Vrbanovic, Ward 2 Councillor for the City of Kitchener
The latest in the city’s efforts to address homelessness in the area came after a committee meeting Monday night. Kitchener councillors have voted to work with the region. Recommendations at the meeting suggested joining the regional processes already underway to ensure the homeless in the region have somewhere to stay, especially during the winter. Chair and Councillor, Berry Vrbanovic concluded the meeting with an optimistic message. “I am hopeful that there is going to be a solution in place by November the 1st. I am confident in the fact that the region has taken this seriously.”
Vrbanovic says that originally the region was going to report back to council in November, but now they will bring an interim report back at the end of this month.
