Gas rate hike approved at Kitchener Utilities

Customers with Kitchener Utilities will see their gas bill rise by $40 a year.

The increase was approved by city council at their meeting on Monday night.

This past June, council directed Kitchener Utilities to change its gas purchase policy to a three year cycle to match a market responsive model.

The extreme winter saw an increase in demand for gas which caused the purchase price to rise, but Deputy CAO of Infrastructure Services Pauline Houston says because of their pricing model, the direct impact to customers was minimal.

The new rates will remain consistent through the upcoming winter and city officials say Kitchener Utilities currently has the lowest utility cost in the province.
