The Victoria Park neighbourhood in downtown Kitchener has been nominated for “Great Place to Live in Canada!” The contest site says the area “brings together a mix of living, recreation, and social activities and is a year round destination.”
The numerous events held in the downtown are also highlighted as a reason to live in the area. They also boast that it is possible to get anywhere without a vehicle as walking and cycling trails and the Charles Street bus terminal are all nearby.
10:30- Should Western nations pay ransoms to ISIS and other terrorist organizations for hostages like James Foley?
According to the Times, citing a representative of Foley’s family, ISIS had until recently been demanding $100 million for his release and that of a man held with him. The U.S., however, has a policy of not paying ransoms, as does Britain, but the same isn’t true for other European countries. In fact, according to the Times, kidnapping Europeans has become the main source of revenue for al-Qaida and its affiliates, who’ve taken in at least $125 million in ransom payments in just the past five years for more than 50 European nationals that were taken hostage. Although al-Qaida recently kicked out ISIS for being too brutal, the Times cites recently released hostages as saying its members knew what kind of ransoms had been paid for Europeans and wanted to get in on the action.
