11:00- Garth Whyte, President and CEO of Restaurants Canada
The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) moratorium on the foodservice industry is over in an official capacity only. Government’s new changes to the program will make it unavailable or cost-prohibitive to employers, essentially keeping the moratorium in effect. “We appreciate the TFW program will be technically available, but are concerned by the impact of these changes on our members, their employees and their customers,” said Garth Whyte, President and CEO of Restaurants Canada. Restaurants Canada is urging government to come up with a national labour strategy that addresses key problems in the Canadian job market, including the mismatch of Canadians available for work with areas suffering labour shortages, and the changing demographics of the Canadian workforce that make it hard to fill vacancies at all skill levels.
11:30- Andrew Jackson, Senior Policy Advisor at the Broadbent Institute
The Broadbent Institute is calling on Canadian businesses and the federal government to create 186,000 full-time co-op, paid internship and summer jobs to help young people make a successful transition from education to work in a new report. Inspired by an employment strategy endorsed by the Council of the European Union, the proposal is a first step in the development of a Youth Job Guarantee that would ensure those under age 25 have access to a good job, paid internship, or training position within four months of leaving formal education or becoming unemployed.
