This past long and snowy winter and the damaging ice storm in late December will likely cost the City of Kitchener an extra $1.4 million, city council learned this week. The winter was unusually bad for several reasons: first, there was just a lot of snow, the sustained cold meant that the snow never went away, instead piling up into ever-higher snowbanks that spilled onto city streets. That meant crews were kept busy clearing. Both those factors pushed the costs of snow removal $600,000 over budget. The city plans to apply to a provincial program for help with cleanup costs, but won’t learn for months whether it will be reimbursed. The extra costs can likely be absorbed through savings in other areas and by postponing some work such as tree pruning or forestry maintenance.

Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak plans to campaign in Toronto today — a day after revealing more details of his million jobs plan. Hudak admits if the government just continued the policies of the last decade, more than 523-thousand jobs would be created anyway. But he says his nine-point plan would create the other half-million jobs. Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne campaigns today in Mississauga, visits a school in Guelph and will open a campaign office in London. N-D-P Leader Andrea Horwath begins her day with a news conference at Queen’s Park, then goes to St. Catharines for some mainstreeting at a mall, and then opens a campaign office in Brantford.
