Rangers hold 2nd pick in Saturday’s OHL draft

The 2014 OHL Priority Selection Draft begins tomorrow at 9 a.m.
The Kitchener Rangers will draft second overall behind the Sarnia Sting. The Rangers picks look like this:

The Sarnia Sting will announce their first selection this morning. First, let’s make it clear that there is no way of predicting how the draft will play out. With that said, expect the Sting to select Jakob Chychrun of the Toronto Jr. Canadiens. He’s widely regarded as the top defenceman in minor midget.
The Rangers meantime, in their re-build phase, need scoring. That makes Adam Mascherin (86PTS – 44G 42A – 44GP) of the Vaughan Kings a likely pick for second overall. Here’s his scouting bio:
“Adam is one of the purest goal scorers at the minor midget level in years. He shoots the puck better than most Jr aged players do now with velocity and accuracy and he gets it off from all over the ice. He is a powerful skater that has great jump and reaches top speed quickly. The GTHL Player of the Year really elevated his compete and consistency levels since the Silverstick tournament and has separated himself from the rest of the forwards in this draft. Overall Adam is going to be a player that will score a lot of goals in the OHL. OHL comparable – Jeff Carter.”
Rangers GM Murray Hiebert tells 570 News, the draft is a different animal.
“You just never what direction it’s going to go. All of a sudden there could be a run on goaltenders. One goaltender goes and all of sudden you’ll see three or four go”, said Murray.
