With the rain – comes the flooding

It is certainly a relief to head above the freezing mark and feel the warmth of sunshine but with that comes melting, rain, and flooding.
Director of building for the city of Kitchener, Mike Seiling tells 570 News one tip that will help prevent pools of water in your basement.
“Remove any snow and any ice that’s in the downspouts…you just have to shovel out a 2-ft by 2-ft area where the downspout is, and just make sure it’s still connected because a dog or someone may have kicked it over.”
Seiling also recommends clearing snow off eaves troughs and overhangs to avoid ice damming or water pooling on your roof.
“Take your shovel and brush off any snow that’s at the eaves troughs, that will expose some of the shingles and the sun will heat those shingles up quicker and that will help and prevent any ice damming, and when the snow starts to melt, you don’t want that water coming back in your house.”
On top of that, he advises all to clear catch basins and remove snow piled up around doors and windows.
