Just a day before the long-awaited Kitchener Rangers home opener, the on-ice leadership squad for the Blueshirts was announced.
Andrew MacNiel gets the title of 61st captain in franchise history, and the third defenceman in a row to hold the position.
“Andrew is a natural leader and a great teammate. He’s a competitor with plays a fearless game. He has everything you want in a Captain and he’s earned this,” said Head Coach, Jeff Kyrzakos.
The 19-year-old Montreal Canadiens prospect has made his name known both on and off the ice in the three years he has been with the East Avenue Blue.
Andrew’s Ambition, a charitable initiative started by MacNeil, has raised more than $58,000 in support of childhood cancer research.

“Being the captain of the Kitchener Rangers means everything to me,” said MacNiel.
“To be able to lead such an historic franchise is an honour and a privilege. I was lucky enough to learn from two great captains in Cam Reid and Matt Andonovski, and I feel ready to lead this group into battle every night.”
Rounding out the leadership squad, Alexander Bilecki and Luca Romano have been named alternate captains for the current season.
In addition to Bilecki and Romano, Cameron Arquette will wear the “A” for away games and Tanner Lam on home games throughout the season.
The new leaders will hit the ice for the club’s home opener on Friday night against the Owen Sound Attack. The teams championship banners will also be raised that night.
