Opposition parties win Thursday’s byelections

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne is trying to put the best face on a disastrous showing in two Ontario byelections.

Wynne admits it’s a hard night to lose the Liberal seat in Niagara Falls to the N-D-P and fail to wrest the Toronto-area riding of Thornhill from the Tories.

But she says the byelections are mere skirmishes in advance of the next general election.

Wynne says voters in the two ridings knew they could vote against the Liberals because it wouldn’t change the government.

Tory leader Tim Hudak says voters sent the governing Liberals a clear message that they are unhappy with the government’s performance.

The byelections are widely seen as a chance to test voter intentions, and party messages for a general election that could come as early as this spring.
