11:00am- Charlie Gillis, Maclean’s Magazine National Correspondent, Re: Why have the Sochi Games have made Russia a target of terrorism? The insurgents based in the North Caucasus are back at war, and Russian civilians are once again targets. But most importantly, the terrorists need not hit the heavily guarded venues around Sochi to ruin President Vladimir Putin’s big party: Moscow’s shiny-happy message about these being the safest Olympics was lost in December when two suicide bombings took place some 700 km from the site.
11:30am- Jesse Kline, National Post writer, Re: Vancouver has banned doorknobs. Halifax is considering a ban. While the bans make sense for public buildings and offices that should be accessible to all members of the public, why should private homes be required to have accessible door handles, even if there are no people with disabilities living there? If the government is going to make it its business to ensure that all homes are accessible, just in case a future owner needs these features and is too lazy to install them himself, why not mandate light-switch panels, walk-in bathtubs and elevators instead of stairs?
