Hundreds remember Kayla Baker

Hundreds gathered Wednesday afternoon to remember 15-year-old Kayla Baker.
The Cambridge teen died on New Year’s Day at Toronto’s Sick Kids Hospital.
She had been battling pulmonary fibrosis for the last three years.
Baker underwent a single lung transplant back in April, but later in the year doctors told her the cancer had returned and that she would not be able to go home.
Kayla’s family was worried they wouldn’t be able to fill the Knights of Columbus room where the memorial was held, but it was clear that family, friends, and former classmates of the late teen weren’t planning on staying home.
Susan, Kayla’s mother tells 570 News that her daughter “can now breath…she hasn’t been able to breath in a long time and running was something that she wanted to do, so she can breath and she gets to run.”
Susan adds they hope people around the world can be inspired by Kayla’s story.
“She was given some really bad news…but she took it in the positive manor and she never once said ‘why me’…she was just very proud of the gift she was given and made the best of it that she possibly could.”
As Kayla’s best friend, Ashlee Hardey tells 570 News she was someone who always understood her. She describes the service that took place Wednesday morning.
“It was a celebration…she accomplished a lot and she was just a good person so that’s what we celebrated, we didn’t celebrate her gone.”
In lieu of flowers, her family is asking you consider making a donation to Sick Kids Foundation/ Run aLung or registering to become an organ donor.
