Tom Thomson painting nets $172,500 at Consignor online Canadian art auction

TORONTO – A much-touted 100-year-old portrait by Tom Thomson has sold at an online auction, but fell short of its expected sale price.
Consignor Canadian Fine Art says the painting “Daydreaming” sold for $172,500 at an inaugural semi-annual sale that ran Nov. 20 to 29. That includes a 15 per cent buyer’s premium.
The new auction house calls it a rare portrait by the landscape artist. Consignor originally estimated it could fetch between $200,000 and $250,000.
It says another work by Thomson, called “Near Owen Sound,” sold for $80,500 while other sales included Ivan Eyre’s 1972 piece “Green Ledge” for $44,850; and a 1960 print by Sybil Andrews called “Sails” for $23,000.
Other sales were works by Canadian artists Cornelius Krieghoff, Frank Johnston, A.Y. Jackson, A.J. Casson, L.L. Fitzgerald, Doris McCarthy, Jean-Paul Riopelle and Kim Dorland.
Consignor president Rob Cowley says online bids came from across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia and Australia.
Consignor Canadian Fine Art is a new a partnership between art auction veterans from Joyner Waddington’s Canadian Fine Art and Mayberry Fine Art. Consignor.ca was previously a branch of Mayberry Fine Art.
