It was a long day and night at work for hydro workers in Waterloo Region.
They spent hours on the line restoring power to the thousands that were left in the dark because of the strong winds and freezing rain that knocked down power lines and hydro poles.
At one point yesterday Waterloo North Hydro had 27 thousand customers without power.
The City of Kitchener had to call in additional help from contractors and the City of Brantford to deal with the damage caused by the ice storm.
Wilf Meston, Vice President of Operations for Kitchener -Wilmot Hydro, explained to 570 News that power lines along Nafziger Road and Notre Dame Drive were broken and those areas were without power for most of the day
Meantime in Cambridge nearly 300 residents were left in the dark.
Freezing rain and excessive winds damaged hydro poles on Shellard Road and Franklin Boulevard. Barb Shortreed of Cambridge Hydro says crews began working during the night and throughout the day Friday.
Waterloo-North Hydro crews continue to try to restore power today.
Officials tell 570 News three crews worked throughout the night, but up to 750 customers remain without power.
Most of those outages are small, isolated cases, scattered throughout Wellesley and Woolwich townships.
There is still no estimate on what time power will be fully restored.
As for Kitchener-Wilmott Hydro …. there are small pockets out in Kitchener and about four thousand customers in Wilmot township remain without power.
Officials expect to get everyone back on line by today’s end — and most residents in the township and New Hamburg can expect to have power restored within a few hours.
However, Wilmot Line might take until Sunday to repair.
