IBM and U-W teaming up

IBM and the University of Waterloo are joining forces for an initiative
that will create almost 150 jobs.
It’s establishing the world’s first, virtual IBM Canada Research and Development Centre.
Researchers at some of the top universities will work together with a focus on
data management of health care, water conservation as well as energy management.
The research projects will be further supported by an expansion of IBM’s software
development labs in Markham and Ottawa, and a new high performance data centre in Barrie.
The total cost is $210 million, with the province providing $15 million of that.
Six other universities are part of the network, including the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto.
“They’re going to be working on a variety of project areas…also address some major problems that are facing the province and really, society in general.” said Kitchener-Centre MPP, John Milloy.
