School boards scrap bell times changes

The debate over changing school bell times in Waterloo Region is over.
The public school board voted last night to follow the lead of the Catholic board and ditch plans to change start and end times for schools in the Region.
The Catholic board made the decision yesterday morning and the public board followed that up last night. Both boards were pitching the idea, in part, as a way to saved a combined $2 million a year in transportation costs, but growing opposition from many parents forced them to abandon the plan.
Concerns raised by parents included the safety of young children who would have to go to the school earlier in the morning, and later start times for high school students would cut into their part time work schedules and extracurricular activities.
