Kitchener’s overnight parking ban takes into effect this week

It might seem too soon, given the lack of snow on city streets, but starting December 1st you’ll have to find an alternate parking spot if you’re used to shelving your vehicle on the road overnight.
Shayne Turner, director of bylaw enforcement with the city of Kitchener, tells 570 News the overnight parking ban is in effect until March 31st and is enforced between the hours of 2:30 and 6am. The ticket amount is $30 and, Turner says, in the event that a vehicle is creating a problem with snow plows they may be removed. There are no exemptions during the four month period. According to Turner, the ban goes into effect whether there’s snow on the ground or not: “…in order to ensure consistent messaging across the city that we want to reduce the amount of parking on city streets to help our snow removal operations.”
Turner says the overnight parking ban is not to be confused with the “tag-and-tow” bylaw. The tag-and-tow bylaw is also known as the “snow events” bylaw. It comes into effect whenever there is credible information suggesting a heavy snowfall. “Once the Director of Operations sees there is an impending heavy snowfall he’ll declare a snow event, and that means there is no parking on any city street at any time while that snow event is in effect,” says Turner. The amount of the parking ticket for parking on the street during a snow event is $80.
