RIM forms team to find out what happened during recent outage

Research in Motion has formed, what’s being dubbed a SWAT team, to get to the bottom of last month’s BlackBerry outage which affected millions of customers.

Its job will be to determine the exact cause of the outage and then come up with solutions to ensure it never happens again.

The group will be headed up by RIM’s chief technology officer, David Yach.

Patrick Spence, Head of Regional Sales and Marketing for the Waterloo-based company, tells Bloomberg News they have a number of key questions to answer, such as “Do we need to make any changes to either distribute traffic differently or look at how we do this completely differently?”

He goes on to say, “This will certainly give us pause to figure if there’s something else we need to be doing and so we are looking at what is the longer-term impact. There’s nothing that’s not on the table.”

RIM could go as far as redesigning the server network.
