To tweet or not to tweet

A Waterloo City Councillor has been found not to be in violation of council’s code of conduct.
The findings come after a complaint was filed regarding one councillors use of Twitter.
Last June, Councillor Karen Scian tweeted several times as residents spoke against a townhouse complex being proposed near detached homes in Beechwood.
According to today’s Record, one tweet read “I am aghast. Embarrassed. Furious #not impressed #this is not my waterloo.”
In a report presented to council yesterday, Integrity Commissioner Greg Levine says Scian’s tweets during the meeting are quote “somewhat troubling and could be seen to be tending to disrespectfulness.”
But he then adds “It would be too harsh and ultimately unfair to see the tweets as violating a code of conduct that requires councillors to show courtesy and respect to delegations.”
Levine is recommending city officials implement some type of twitter policy, which could happen later this year.
