DNA canvas in Varaschin murder

Orangeville Police and OPP are hoping to collect DNA samples from a group of men as they try to find Sonia Varaschin’s killer.
The 42-year-old Orangeville nurse was murdered in her home last August
Police say they’ll be contacting a select group of men over 18 years old and asking for a voluntary buccal swab. They say they found DNA during the investigation and are confidant they will be able to find Varaschin’s killer through the samples.
Police say the DNA will only be used in this investigation and any non-matching samples will be destroyed.
In a media release, Detective Inspector Andy Karski of the OPP’s Criminal Investigation Branch said, “By providing a DNA sample you will assist in our efforts to catch the person responsible for the senseless and brutal slaying of this young girl and bring them to justice.”
Investigators are also asking anyone to contact the Orangeville Police Service Tip Line at (519) 941-2522, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 if they know of anyone who begins to show a change in behaviour or may have abruptly moved as a result of the DNA canvas.
