LRT remains hot topic

Light Rail Transit was a hot-topic at Cambridge Council on Monday night.
That’s because Councillor Karl Kiefer brought a motion to the table.
His motion recommended that City Council and the residents of Cambridge are not prepared to support the LRT as it is being proposed by the Region of Waterloo.
He says that Cambridge isn’t going to benefit from the LRT, so residents shouldn’t have to pay for it.
He wants it ran all the way down to Cambridge.
The motion also recommends that if the Regional Council is going to support the proposal as status quo, that the Region “area rate” the LRT costs to the taxpayers of Kitchener and Waterloo and that Cambridge tax payers be exempt from the additional costs.
Council was supportive of the motion and will look at it again come May 3rd once it is re-worded.
He says he wants to send a message to Regional Council of how strongly they feel.
