Balsillie defends the PlayBook

After last night’s glitzy launch party in New York City, Research in Motion Co-CEO Jim Balsillie is defending the new PlayBook, saying the less than glowing reviews are unfair.

Balsillie tells CNBC he’s very pleased with the product. He says we need to focus on the core attributes, which include an unsurpassed web experience with full flash capability, superb performance, enterprise security, and great portability.

BlackBerry and Android players will be available for the PlayBook this summer. Balsillie says they have an over the air utility which means you can get lots of upgrades and new features.

The initial reviews out this week have been on the fence for the product, saying it’s a good looking device but doesn’t have the applications that the iPad and other tablets have. Critics are also pointing out that the PlayBook has to be connected to a BlackBerry to do email, but RIM says that it needs to do it this way to protect business customers and networks.

The interview comes after some critical early reviews and reports that RIM shares fell 91 cents to $53.92 yesterday.

The PlayBook is out April 19th.
