Andrew Telegdi immigrated to Canada from Hungary with his family, eventually settling in Toronto.
At the University of Waterloo he majored in political science and psychology. In two terms as President of the Federation of Students, Andrew helped found the Waterloo Public Interest Research Group, Waterloo Cooperative Residence Inc., and the daycare in Klemmer Farmhouse.
After university, Andrew headed Youth in Conflict with the Law and was a leader in Waterloo Region’s crime prevention strategy. He was involved with many organizations, including the K-W Multicultural Centre, Catholic Family Counselling, St. John’s Kitchen, The Working Centre, Wilfrid Laurier University, and Conestoga College.
Andrew served as a City of Waterloo and Region of Waterloo Councillor (1985-1993), establishing his commitment to the environment and the business and technology sectors.
As Member of Parliament for Kitchener-Waterloo (1993-2008), Andrew championed Waterloo Region, facilitating its growth as a centre of high-tech industry, in close relation to its colleges and universities.
Andrew served on the House Standing Committees of Citizenship and Immigration; Aboriginal Affairs, Northern Development, and Natural Resources; Human Rights; Justice; Canadian Heritage; and Public Accounts. He was Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration and Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister with emphasis on Aboriginal Affairs. He co-founded the Liberal Post-Secondary Education Caucus and the Caucus Task Force on the Future of Financial Services, where he wrote the chapter on insurance.
Andrew and wife, Nancy Curtin-Telegdi, have a daughter, Erin. Andrew enjoys reading, fishing, golf and chess.
