This article is more than 5 years old.
It’s been called the Google of Canadian history. A new search engine called the Canadiana Discovery Portal is helping us stay connected to our past.
Canadiana.org Executive Director Ron Walker tells 570 News, it’s able to pull up books, video, audio, and photos that are stored in library archives and museums across the country.
Walker says it makes finding what you’re looking for much simpler. You can type in your search term and it looks through all the collections loaded in the search engine, rather than having to look through each collection separately.
The Canadiana Discovery Portal has been a couple of years in the making. Walker says they tried a different type of technology before switching to one that’s more efficient. He says they ended up redeveloping the system and now have over 62 million pages loaded.
Walker says the main goal of the website is to make Canadian history easily available to everyone. He adds, “we have to preserve our heritage and this may be one of the best ways to do it in the long run.”
