Pay Parking In Kitchener Could Be Going Up

Kitchener city council is considering changes to municipal parking operations that will give taxpayers a break, but put more of a burden on those who work in the core.

Council discussed a proposal Monday night that would create a new parking division operating solely on revenue from those who pay for a parking space.

Councillor Dan Glenn-Graham says the strategy would involve increasing the cost of monthly parking passes by 10% each year, until 2014.

The increase would see the price increase by about $10 or so as of March 1st.

Right now, Glenn-Graham says it costs about $111 for a spot in a parking garage and $96 for a space in a surface lot.

That would help pay for the city to replace more surface lots with parking garages.

Glenn-Graham says it would also encourage people who work downtown to get out of their cars, and cycle or use public transportation to get to work.

The proposal will go before Council for approval in principle next Monday and then final approval once the budget is passed in March.
