The snow continues to fly.
Environment Canada has updated a severe weather bulletin for Southern Ontario to say that the snowfall warning continues for Kitchener, Cambridge, and the Region of Waterloo as well as Guelph, Erin, Southern Wellington County, Mount Forest, Arthur and Northern Wellington County.
570 News Weather Specialist John Wilson says we can expect a strong bitter north wind at 30-50km/h with 2 cm of flurries. He’s expecting it to be very cold with a guaranteed high steady at minus 9, with windchill values nearing minus 20.
For tonight; windy and cold — steady near minus 9 with more flurries.
Then on Tuesday; a stiff northwest wind brings heavier flurries and a chance of a heavier squall. high of minus 7.
Environment Canada says the main problem is a winter storm centred over Lake Ontario that will track toward Southern Quebec by this morning. This storm will bring significant amounts of snow north of its track and further south a messy mix of rain and wet snow will fall in areas near the Lake Ontario and Lake Erie shores before changing over to snow.
Snow squalls will quickly develop in the wake of the storm in many parts of the snow belt regions. Snow squall watches have been issued and additional watches or warnings may be required.
Dangerous winter driving conditions are likely due to low to nil visibility in heavy snow, blowing snow and from accumulating snow. Travellers should adjust plans accordingly or postpone trips until the storm is over.
Meanwhile a powerful winter storm is dumping heavy snow across the upper U-S Midwest as well, closing major highways and cancelling more than 16-hundred flights in Chicago.
The heavy snow has also collapsed the roof of the Minnesota Vikings’ stadium.
At least four weather-related deaths have been reported as the storm system dropped nearly 2 feet of snow in parts of Minnesota and moved east.
The National Weather Service says blizzard warnings are in effect for parts of eastern Iowa, southeastern Wisconsin, northwestern Illinois and northern Michigan.
No one was hurt when the inflatable top of the Metrodome in Minneapolis collapsed but the Minnesota Vikings’ game against the New York Giants today has been moved to Detroit’s Ford Field.
