Hospital unveils new ICU

It’s a big dose of medicine for local health care. Grand River Hospital officially unveiled its new state-of-the-art intensive care unit Friday morning.
Located on a newly-built second floor of the hospital’s F wing, the new ICU is almost four times as big as the old one, and while it starts with the same 14 bed capacity the previous ICU had, it will one day expand to 20 beds.
Medical Director of the ICU, Dr. Paul Hosek, tells 570 News the new facility is all about space.
He says in the old unit, between staff, equipment, and family, everyone was tripping over themselves attending to a patient’s needs.
The design of the new ICU is not only more spacious in each patient area, all the equipment can be suspended from the ceiling by rotating arms.
The main features of the ICU include:
– more room for patients, families and care providers and increasing infection control standards
– large windows for every patient room
– ceiling-mounted articulating arms for instruments, monitors and supplies, which reduces equipment on the floor and improves infection control practices
– glass partitions in the rooms allowing for improved monitoring of patients
– five new isolation suites
And the improvements don’t only focus on the patient: two new quiet rooms, plus washrooms, a shower and sleeper chairs will allow family and friends to be close to their loved one at all times.
The new intensive care unit is part of the hospital’s $63.5 million patient care development plan.
Patients will begin receiving care in the new space next week.
