Most student rentals are in good shape

An off-campus housing specialist says about three quarters of the rentals available to university students in Waterloo are in good condition.
But Roni Oestreich says there are some landlords whose properties are not well-maintained.
April from Peterborough has been through it.
She’s moving out of an older home so she can sublet while she finishes the last of her courses.
April says her former accommodations had cracked tiles and dirty bathrooms.
Oestreich says it’s not necessary for students to settle for
a unit that’s in bad shape because there is an abundance of housing available.
When looking for accommodations, Oestreich has a checklist to prevent students from signing a bad lease.
That includes finding out if the landlord will be around for repairs and making sure there are working locks and smoke alarms, as well as a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
