Former Kitchener Centre MP Mike Morrice no longer has competition for the title of Green Party leader.
The only other candidate in the race, Nira Dookeran withdrew from the federal leadership race earlier this week.
“For personal and family reasons, after much soul-searching, I have decided to withdraw from the Green Party of Canada Leadership Contest,” said Dookeran.
“I want to express my best wishes to Mike Morrice, my fellow candidate in the Leadership Contest. We, as a Party, have a big job ahead of us.”
Dookeran has been a member of the Green Party for 12 years.
Despite her move, the vote for the new leader will go as planed this fall.
“Our work continues,” said Morrice. “This leadership race is a moment to build solidarity, and build the momentum we need to take on the billionaire class and fight for a thriving, fair, and clean economy.”
Morrice was elected MP in Kitchener Centre in 2021, becoming the first Green MP elected in Ontario and the second Green MP elected outside of B.C.
He lost his seat in the next election to Conservative Kelly DeRidder in 2025. He currently lives in the Cherry Park neighbourhood of Kitchener.
The new leader of the Green Party will be announced on November 15.
