It’s a first for Canada. Jake is the first Asian elephant to be born in Canada via artificial insemination.
The elephant is a new arrival at the African Lion Safari.
Charlie Gray, Superintendent of Elephants at African Lion Safari says the birth is very important as it represents a culmination of years of research and development that helps solve some of the obstacles involved in the conservation of the Asian elephant.
The African Lion Safari says Asian elephants are an endangered species with less than
35,000 in the wild.
13 of the Safari’s 16 Asian elephants have been born at the park.
