Pool safety tips

In light of the drowning of an almost three year old boy in a backyard swimming pool in Kitchener, we have some water safety tips to pass along.

Denise Keelan is the Manager of Aquatics and Athletics for the City of Kitchener, and says the key safety rule about pools is that nothing replaces supervision.

She says flotation devices an automatic pool alarms do not substitute for staying within arms reach when a child is in the water.

For anyone heading up to the cottage or Sauble Beach this long weekend, Keelan reminds you lake water is still very cold in May, and hypothermia can affect even strong swimmers.

Keelan says talk with your family about water safety, don’t assume kids know to stay away from water.

And in a worse case scenario of finding a child motionless in the water, Keelan says get the child out of the water first, then call 911, and provide resuscitation.
